A BETTER BROADBAND FOR MELBURY OSMOND

As a resident of Melbury Osmond you are at present condemned to very poor Broadband performance, although we do have a connection, by todays standards our speed is very slow, it might be OK to check your email and do a bit of browsing but for business users wishing to download and upload large files it is unacceptably slow. It is also nigh impossible to take advantage of services such as the iPlayer and many of the other streaming services available. The government has promised us all at least 2Mb/s by 2015 which is still slow by todays fibre speeds of between 50Mb/s and 100Mb/s but still welcome when you consider our village average is only 0.5Mb/s.

As we have been promised this increase in speed things are beginning to happen, so I am publishing this page to keep everyone informed. If you have not registered an interest in faster broadband from previous campaigns you can do so
here.
I have a list of 30 residents who backed previous initiatives so please join the list so we can make a strong case for high-speed broadband in Melbury Osmond.

10th February - Broadband Funding for Dorset

The latest position with the provision of superfast broadband for Dorset is as follows, the county bid to release the £9.44 million funds from BDUK was submitted last month (January) and it is hoped to have approval of the bid and therefore release the money this month (February).

The contract then has to go out to tender and an announcement  on who the contractor to supply the new fibre network will be late 2012 with installation to commence early 2013.

Some other news announced by BT this week, FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) speeds will be increased to 80Mb/s (from current 40Mb/s) later this year (2012).

BT has also announced that from 2013 all FTTC areas (should be us) will have the option of FTTP on Demand (Fibre to the Premises) which will give a full 100Mb/s (to be increased to 300Mb/s in 2013) from home with no copper drop off,but this will come at an additional expense for installation and per month, prices yet to be announced…. but won't be cheap.
